Homemade Bread

Updated: Jul 12

Flavorful homemade bread. Simple and so good.

A loaf of homemade bread on a wood cutting board with a slice cut out of it spread with jam. A mug with a drink is in the backround.

This recipe has been made several times on the ranch and is enjoyed by many. One of the best times to make it is in the winter when we have our wood stove fired up. The smell of bread baking in a wood cook stove is truly a wonderful smell. Many times this bread has been made with a nice pot of chicken noodle soup. It also tastes nice as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Lots of people have a hard time learning to make bread but this is a pretty simple recipe and hopefully great for beginners! I have made this bread a lot and eating a piece of it as soon as it is cool enough to touch with a little butter is so good. If you enjoy warm crusty bread this is the recipe for you it gets a nice crusty top that is oh so good. One of my favorite meals to have fresh bread with is chicken noodle soup. We have had this bread with soup so many times, it is definitely on our list of comfort foods. Slice a fresh loaf of this bread with some pasta or fettuccine Alfredo and yum. It does not get much tastier.

  • 8 cups white flour

  • 2 Tbsp. honey

  • 3 1/2 tsp. salt

  • 1/2 cup milk

  • 3 cups warm water

  • 4 1/2 tsp. yeast

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Then grease two loaf pans with butter. Make sure to get all up the sides of the pan.

  2. In a mixing bowl combine the flour, salt, and honey. Stir until combined. Then pour in the milk and stir lightly. Put the warm water in a measuring cup or glass and add the yeast. Stir the yeast mixture and let it sit for five minutes. Now add your yeast mixture to the flour blend and mix until you have a sticky dough. Cover the mixing bowl with plastic wrap and let it sit in a warm place for one hour.

  3. The dough should have doubled in size. Next divide the dough between your two greased pans and place it in the oven. It will need to cook about 45 minutes to an hour or until the internal temperature reaches 180 degrees F.

  4. Once it is cooked remove it from the oven and run a knife around the edge of the pan. Let the bread cool then remove the bread from the pans. Now your freshly baked homemade bread is ready to enjoy with your favorite meal or topping!

If you want a smoother top to your bread put a little bit of flour on the top of the dough once you have put it in your pans. Then carefully smooth the top of the dough with your hand.
